Rooted in Canterbury, tended by family

Waipuna Farm began with a straightforward idea: plant crops that belong in the Canterbury climate, care for the ground year after year, and keep harvesting honest. What started as a modest block alongside sheltered shelterbelts has grown into a family commitment to producing exceptional blackcurrants.

Our slice of New Zealand pairs cold Southern alpine winters with long, sunlit summer days. This natural temperature contrast causes our blackcurrant bushes to slow their growth and pack every berry with deep color, tart brightness, and rich nutrients.

Every winter pruning cut, irrigation decision, and seasonal hand-pick is managed directly by our family. We grow without unnecessary inputs, working in rhythm with the land so buyers receive fruit picked at its true peak.

Flowering

Delicate pale blossoms open across the orchard branches in early October. Crisp Canterbury mornings and native pollinators awaken each plant to set the season's fruit.

Ripening

Plump berry clusters deepen from rich magenta to lustrous black under long southern sunshine. Slow ripening locks in deep color, bright acidity, and concentrated antioxidants.

Freshly Picked

Hand-guided machinery gathers each row at peak ripeness in early January. The harvested berries arrive in shaded field crates with their delicate, waxy natural fruit bloom intact.

How we grow

Every berry we harvest comes from living soil. We feed our rows with organic compost, rely on pure alpine snowmelt, and leave generous native borders so natural predators keep the canopy balanced without heavy sprays.

Organic compost feeding

Rich organic amendments and compost teas build healthy microbial life deep in our Canterbury silt loams.

Glacial runoff irrigation

Southern Alps snowmelt feeds precise drip lines that give each bush pure moisture without wasting a drop.

Protective native hedgerows

Shelterbelts of New Zealand natives shelter beneficial insects and predators, keeping pests in natural check.

Harvested fresh by hand and local sorting machines in Mid Canterbury each summer.
